Master-Symposium HEAD Geneva March 24-26 2014 (Work.master and Trans)
Our Master-symposium meetings of this year will be organized by HEAD-students with the aim of emphasizing discussions and presentations around the different personal works and artistic projects of the participants. The contexts and also the forms will be very different however, this applies to the accompanying projects as well.
Films and videos will be screened in the evening. So, if you have a good one ... (meeting 7pm in room 25, boulevard helvétique 9, 1201 Genève)
We will start with a common brunch at 1pm in the hall of Boulevard Helvétique 9, 1205 Genève.
And after that, one of the following 4 programmes organised by HEAD students has to be chosen. (All in English & French.)
Programme 1 : Wellness Welcome
This proposal focuses on creating apparals of exchange relating to wellness. For example sauna, waterpipe, walking on the mountain, site-seeing/art-seeing… Take in your bag : swimingsuit, gourd, basket shoes, energy bars & stuffs !
Programme 2: Bierartopoly
We would like to organise the artistic monopoly game. For this, we will first invent the rules of the game. A game in wich we will play with artistics mouvements and tendencies for building an art piece from odds and ends. For exemple, you buy the minimalist mouvement or the situationist one, by buying the materials as cardboard or glitters… Number of participants: minimum 2 per group Warning! you won’t be allowed to leave the game sessions
Programme 3 : SeeDrinkEatArt
We would like to dedicate this Master Symposium in visiting places and exhibition in the city of Geneva. As everybody is often busy in his personal life, these three days will be devoted to art through cultural venues in the city. Browse openings, exhibitions and museums but above all exchanging our points of view. We will also visit the studios of the group members. According to the schedule of the current exhibitions, one day will be devoted to discussion of personal work of each participant. The days will also be punctuated by lunch breaks with conviviality.
Programme 4 : Migros Bags and Speed dating
Let’s meet and talk about our works, without trying to reproduce the classical schema of presentation. We will start with a speed dating and croissant-coffee then find other format to discuss on and around our works! Bring your Migros Bag ! filled with f.e. diffent items (found, selfmade, collections etc.)...:

- and/or a book or a text
- and/or photographs
- and/or objects

« En 1991, le roman de Douglas Coupland Generation X : Tales for an Accelerated Culture lance la marque d’une génération. Il y dépeint un groupe d’individus nomades nés entre 1965 et 1977, Baby Busts détachés qui s’opposent aux boomers. Le « X » se réfère à l’anonymat d’une nouvelle catégorie culturelle, consciente de son éclatement, de la fin des grands récits héroïques, qui veulent sortir de la roue statut-argent- ascension sociale qui caractérise l'existence moderne. Smells Like Teen Spiritde Nirvana est la hantise et l’âme des « X ». Dans l’ouvrage d’histoire et d’anticipation Generations: The History of America’s Future, 1584 to 2069 (1991), William Strauss et Neil Howe inventent le label « 13e génération » : la treizième a avoir vu le drapeau américain. Ils définissent ainsi plus qu’un âge, un spot, un point du regard, à partir duquel se créent les conditions d’un nouveau rapport au monde, marqué par l’évolution des technosciences, le début d’Internet, la fin des militantismes, la passage de l’âge de la reproduction à celui de l’accès. La 13e génération, c’est aussi la première à faire revenir, dans l’art, la mémoire des récits de pionniers et d’explorations, les incrustations de Roger Rabbit, la désincarnation des toons, l’image des premiers pas sur la lune, la voix transformée d’Armstrong. Qui s’appuie sur la limite de la représentation ou de sa fin. Qui sait que l’important n’est pas réglé — la synthèse, la totalité, la chose perdue ou rendue, l’accomplissement — et qu’il faudra aller chercher du côté du regard, de la distorsion, de la découpe, de l’extériorité. Visuels de l’Ecal, suivie de l’intervention d’Olivier Bardin
Issu de l’histoire de l’art conceptuel, Olivier Bardin propose des projets à réactiver. L’artiste produit des oeuvres de natures diverses – expositions, émissions de télévision, éditions, films, performances, photographies, etc. – qui explorent les façons dont une identité se construit par des phénomènes de perception et de représentation de soi.
14h à 17h : Discussion entre Jérôme Bel et Patricia Falguières
De ses premiers spectacles dans les années 90 à Cour d’honneur (2013, Festival d’Avignon), en passant par Véronique Doisneau (2004, Opéra national de Paris), le chorégraphe Jérôme Bel questionne les codes des arts vivants, notamment par la mise en scène de performances effectuées par des non-professionnels et un travail documentaire théâtral sur la profession de danseur.
Patricia Falguières est agrégée en histoire et membre de l’école française de Rome. Auteur de nombreux essais et livres, elle enseigne l’histoire de la philosophie et de l’art de la Renaissance à l’Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales (Paris) où elle co-dirige le séminaire «Something you should know: artistes et producteurs aujourd’hui».

David Maroto, The Book Lovers - The Novel as an Art Medium
The Book Lovers is a system atic attem pt to study the phenom enon of artist novels. There are som e exam ples of artist novels in the 20th century, but it is only in the last ten or fifteen years that an increasing num ber of artists have begun to choose the novel as an artistic m edium . Surprisingly, there is a lack of research on this subject. This circumstance gives rise to a situation in which artists who write novels are not aware of others doing the sam e. With The Book Lovers we are intending to create public awareness of this silently widespread artistic trend. The project develops in a number of different stages. Its base is
the creation of a collection of artist novels with a parallel online database, which is
com plem ented with a series of exhibitions and public program s, a pop-up bookstore and a publication. The conference will be structured in two parts. The first part elaborates on the theoretical grounds of the research. The second part is a narrative account of the different project’s installments: M HKA in Antwerp, EFA Project Space in New York City, Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, De Appel in Amsterdam.
David Maroto (b. 1976) is a Spanish artist, curator, writer and gam e designer based in The Netherlands. His wide-ranging practice has led him to exhibit his work on psychoanalysis in the Freud Dreams Museum in St Petersburg, whereas his 8-year project to create a board gam e led to the inclusion of his project Disillusion at the Internationale Spieltage in 2006 (Essen, Germany) and other game fairs worldwide. In 2011 he spent a six-month residency in ISCP New York, where he published his project in the form of a novel, Illusion. In 2012 he took part in the 11th Havana Biennial and carried out a solo project in Artium (Museum of Contemporary Art, Vitoria, Spain) called Illusion- Disillusion. He is currently preparing a gam ebook called The Wheel of Fortune
(Onom atopee), where gam e and novel, his two m ain interests, m eet in one single form . Together with curator Joanna Zielinska, he is developing a long-term project called The
Book Lovers, focused on artist novels. Its base is the creation of a collection of artist novels
with a parallel online database, which is complemented with a series of exhibitions and public programmes, a pop-up bookstore and a publication -all of this in collaboration with a num ber of international art institutions. David holds an MFA degree from the Dutch Art Institute and has recently been offered a place to carry out a PhD research in Edinburgh
College of Art.
Henning Lundkvist, The Young Artist as Writer
About art, writing, and the art of writing. About international art and international
capital. About International Art English and International Business English. About the standardization of language and the lowering of standards. About the Easyjetset and the raise to the bottom . And about som e autobiographical accounts of a young artist who finds his life and work increasingly entangled in these relations.
With an interest in text rather than work, context rather than text, circumstance rather than context, Henning Lundkvist’s works take m any different form s. Through texts, screenings, installations, artist talks, sound works, curated exhibitions and press releases as well as theatre performances, mailouts, and radio drama, Lundkvist is constantly shuffling around the relations between high and low, centre and periphery, utterance and meaning, sense and nonsense, wit and nitwit. Am ong other places, his work has been presented at The Green Parrot (forthcom ing, Barcelona, 2014), Moderna Museet (Stockholm , 2013), Rollaversion Gallery (London, 2013), Tbilisi Art Academ y (Tbilisi, 2012), Iaspis (Stockholm , 2012), Cristina Guerra Contem porary Art (Lisbon, 2011), and Lum iar Cité (Lisbon, 2010). In every master’s program you face a few presentations of your individual work. This gathering of students from all over Switzerland will be about checking out common ground. Starting out from a short introduction to the Whitney Biennial 2014 that just opened in NYC, we will engage in an exchange about your different approaches to art. Are there any shared issues? Is there any generational mood or are we confronted with a vast terrain of microscenes?
The discussions will see breaks with studio-visits and a visit of the show of micrograms at the
Center Robert Walser.
Dans chaque programme de Master vous avez plein de présentations de votre démarche personnelle. Ce symposium d’étudiants / d’étudiantes de différents coins du pays se met à la recherche des champs com- muns. Après une petite introduction à la Whitney-Biennale 2014, qui vient d’ouvrir ses portes à New York, nous cherchons un échange sur vos visions différentes de la production artistique. Est-ce qu’il y a des thèmes communs ? L’énergie de toute une génération, ça existe ?
Ou sommes-nous confrontés à un terrain vaste de microscènes ?
Les discussions seront interrompues par des visites d’atelier et par une visite de l’exposition des microgram- mes au centre Robert Walser.
In jedem Masterstudium gibt es einige Präsentationen der eigenen Arbeit. Dieses Symposium mit Studieren- den aus allen Ecken der Schweiz sucht nach gemeinsamem Grund. Nach einer kurzen Einführung in die Whit- ney-Biennale 2014, die soeben in NYC eröffnet wurde, suchen wir nach einem Austausch unter den verschie- denen künstlerischen Ansätzen. Gibt es gemeinsame Themen? Gibt es ein Gefühl für die Generation oder sind wir vielmehr mit einem unüberschaubaren Feld von Mikroszenen konfrontiert?
Die Diskussionen werden aufgelockert durch Atelierbesuche und durch einen Besuch der Ausstellung Mikro- gramme im Zentrum Robert Walser.

Symposium in Zürich
Kunst - Ökonomie - Stadt
Im Kontext des geplanten Symposiums soll, gemeinsam mit Studenten anderer Schweizer Kunsthochschulen, der Frage nachgegangen werden, ob im Umfeld der bildenden Kunst überhaupt von lokalen „Identitäten“ gesprochen werden kann. Hierzu wollen wir uns der „Kunst-Ökonomie“ der Stadt Zürich zuwenden – wobei für uns weniger die Dynamiken des sogenannten „Kunstmarktes“, als die „Orte“ in welchen Kunst und Kreativität territorialisiert ist, relevant sein werden. Es sind, so unsere These, die Integrations- und Abgrenzungsprozesse, die durch die jeweils präsenten (institutionellen und nicht-institutionellen) Kunst- Räume definiert werden, respektive deren Verzahnungen, welche die Kunstszene einer Stadt ausmachen. Im Kontext des von uns geplanten Symposiums wollen wir uns also der ökonomischen Anlage der Kunstszene Zürichs zuwenden. Wir wollen uns in organisierten Stadtwanderungen und Besuchen unterschiedlicher Örtlichkeiten und Umgebungen jenen, die hiesigen Kunstakteure bedingenden Strukturen annähern. Dabei werden gleichfalls Themen von Urbanität, Stadtplanung und Unternehmensorganisation angesprochen.Die teilnehmenden Studierenden werden in drei Gruppen aufgeteilt, die jeweils ein eigenes, aber inhaltlich ähnliches Programm durchlaufen. Es wird genug
Zeit für Diskussionen und Präsentationen der eigenen Arbeit eingeplant.

- Erster Treffpunkt für alle TeilnehmerInnen am Montag, 24. März um 13 Uhr im MFA Zürich, Förrlibuckstrasse 62, 2. Etage im Forum. Anschiessend formieren sich die Gruppen.
- Am Montag Abend wird es ein gemeinsames Abendessen geben.
- Am Dienstag Abend findet eine Party ab 21 Uhr statt.
- Zu einer Abschlussdiskussion treffen sich alle Studierenden am Mittwoch um
- 14 Uhr in der Förrlibuckstrasse im Forum wieder.

Programm CH-Master-Symposium auf dem Campus
Das Symposium verfolgt zwei Schwerpunkte: Für den Austausch und die Gespräche in der Gruppe
über die individuellen Arbeiten der Studierenden ist das Forum Präsentation reserviert. Vorgesehen sind drei unterschiedliche Gruppen, die durch die Dozierenden Prof. Renée Levi, Dr. Markus Stegmann und Dr. Roman Kurzmeyer begleitet werden. Die Räume sind alle eingerichtet mit Projektoren und Mac.
Als zweiter Schwerpunkt stellen im Forum Interventionen Studierende aktuelle und individuelle Projekte vor, und ehemalige Studierende orientieren und diskutieren über ihre Strategien nach der Studienzeit. So werden unter anderem ein durch Studierende entwickeltes Seminar, kuratorische Projekte und eine als Zwischennutzung angelegte Atelier- und Produktionsgemeinschaft präsentiert.
