Pool 5: We are Institution

Lag der Fokus des kritischen Diskurses der Moderne noch v. a. auf dem individuellen Kunstwerk, so verschiebt sich dieser in jüngerer Zeit immer mehr auch auf das Format der Ausstellung. Ausstellungen sind kulturelle Träger und das Ausstellen damit eine institutionelle Praxis. Mit Hinblick auf die MFA-Degree-Show wird im Rahmen dieser Lehrveranstaltung das Format der Ausstellung vor dem Hintergrund aktueller institutioneller Kontroversen und Debatten diskutiert.

«It’s not a question of being against the institution: we are the institution», schreibt Andrea Fraser in From the Critique of Institutions to an Institution of Critique und betont die Rolle von Künstler*innen bei der Gestaltung der «Institution». Aktuell häufen sich die Proteste gegen grosse Institutionen. In einem Kunstfeld mit fliessenden Grenzen und zugleich starren Machtstrukturen stellen sich daraus zahlreiche brisante Fragen zur Praxis des Ausstellens, die bisweilen medienwirksam diskutiert werden, aber ebenso sehr eine Ebene der Reflexion für Künstler*innen bilden, die sich im Kunstfeld bewegen: Wer stellt wen (nicht) aus? Wo wird was (nicht) gezeigt? Und wer zahlt wieviel?

Ausgangspunkt des Seminars sind Formen und Konzepte des Ausstellens (objektbasierte Ausstellungen, diskursive Ausstellungen, performative Ausstellungen etc.), deren Institutionen im zeitgenössischen Kunstbetrieb (Museen, Galerien, Kunsträume, Web etc.) und die Eigen- und Fremdwahrnehmung von Künstler*innen in diesem Gefüge. Hinzugezogen werden politische, ethische und kulturelle Fragestellungen, mit denen sich Institutionen heute in ihren verschiedenen Tätigkeitsbereichen konfrontiert sehen. Die Fragestellungen werden anhand von konkreten Beispielen, gemeinsamen Ausstellungsbesuchen und dem Austausch mit Akteur*innen aus dem Schweizer Kunstkontext fassbar. Die praxisorientierte Recherche und Diskussion im Seminar haben ferner zum Ziel, die geplante Ausstellung und den eigenen Zugang zum Ausstellen zu reflektieren.

The starting point of this seminar is that of forms and concepts of exhibiting (object-based exhibitions, discursive exhibitions, performative exhibitions, etc.); their institutions in the contemporary art world (museums, galleries, art spaces, web, etc.); the external perception of artists; and the artist’s own perception within this structure. Political, ethical and cultural questions are brought into play, with which institutions today are confronted in their various fields of activity. Questions become tangible by means of practical examples, joint exhibition visits and exchange with actors from the Swiss art context. Practice-oriented research and discussion in the seminar will also aim to reflect on the planned exhibition and one's own approach to exhibiting.

While the focus of the critical discourse of Modernism was primarily on the individual work of art, in recent decades the format of the exhibition has become increasingly important. Exhibitions are cultural vehicles and thus an institutional practice. With regard to the MFA Degree Show, this course will examine the format of the exhibition against the backdrop of current institutional controversies and debates.

In an art field with fluid boundaries and at the same time rigid power structures, numerous controversial questions on the subject of exhibitions arise. These are discussed at times in a terms of media but also form an important space of reflection for artists who are active in the art field: Who exhibits whom (and whom do they not)? Where is what (not) shown? And who pays how much?

Yasmin Afschar (*1985 in Teheran, lebt und arbeitet in Zürich und Aarau) ist Kunsthistorikerin und arbeitet als Kuratorin am Aargauer Kunsthaus, Aarau. Sie studierte Kunstgeschichte in Zürich und Berlin. Seit 2018 betreibt sie zusammen mit Gioia Dal Molin und Gabrielle Schaad die Gesprächsplattform LE FOYER – IN PROCESS und publiziert als freie Autorin regelmässig in monografischen und thematischen Publikationen. Sie ist in unterschiedlichen Jurys und Kommissionen tätig, u.a. war sie 2018 bis 2019 Expertin der Eidgenössischen Kunstkommission.

Yasmin Afschar (*1985 in Tehran, lives and works in Zurich and Aarau) is an art historian and works as a curator at the Aargauer Kunsthaus, Aarau. She studied art history in Zurich and Berlin. Together with Giola Dal Molin and Gabrielle Schaad, she has been running the discussion platform LE FOYER – IN PROCESS since 2018. As a freelance author, she regularly publishes in monographs and topical publications and has also been a member of various juries and commissions, including the Federal Art Commission, where she was an expert from 2018 to 2019.
