Content description

Pool CH 1 is a collaboration between Master Programs MAPS and TRANS.

It focuses on a common reflection on the practice of writing, and is articulated into two workshops.

A first workshop (Pool Ch 1A) will be taught by Fabienne Radi in French, and will take place at HEAD, Geneva; the second workshop (Pool Ch 1B), will be taught by Gregg Smith in English, and will take place at ECAV, Sierre (see workshops outlines below).

In addition to enhance students’ mobility and exchanges on the practice of writing (students can select which workshop they want to participate in), this Pool CH will be followed by a critical common discussion between the participants in the 2 workshops. In this perspective, the coordinators of MAPS and TRANS will collect the texts/images produced during the workshops and will organize a common critical session which synthesis will be published on the Master Hes-so Blog. These materials will be further discussed on-line in the context of moderated discussions.

Pool CH 1A – Short Cuts / Pour faire court

Pool CH 1B - Going inside Time

Gregg Smith

Place: Ecav, Sierre

Dates: Mon 29, Tue 30, Wed 31 October, 2012

The workshop Pool CH 1B - Going inside Time examines of the question common to all time based art forms of how a work of art can avoid being experienced by the viewer in a linear fashion – of having a beginning, middle and an end. What elements might allow the viewer to be active in the viewing process, and for the narration to escape the linear experience of time, that one is waiting for something to become meaningful.

This workshop focuses on the exploration of place and it’s specificity through the body. The body is viewed as a central point of engagement and potential ‘revealer’ of additional meaning, on a separate level to what is being consciously being told, narrated, imparted through the artwork. The workshop seeks to leave a space open in the process of carrying out an artistic intention for additional meanings to emerge, through for example specificities of character, physiogomy, reflex actions, or the navigating a hazardous situation or terrain.

Through focusing on the body and allowing the body to tell its own story, the workshop poses the questions: What meanings can exist in a work beyond the artist’s preconceived intention? And can an artwork benefit from witnessing the resistance of the context to the artist’s gesture or intention?

The workshop is pertinent to those working in video, performance and text-based media.
